Many disabled people require additional balance while participating in a dynamic sport such as alpine skiing. Skiers who can stand with aid are able to rent equipment, with one exception -- outriggers. Outriggers are adapted ski poles with a cuff and handgrip like forearm crutches and have a small ski on the bottom that flips up for maneuverability.
Current outriggers are reported to break near connection points and material failures cause accidents; high prices limit accessibility. Participation in sport provides benefits including: improved mental and physical health, cognitive and social skills, and self confidence. People with the following physical limitations could participate in alpine skiing with minor modifications to outriggers: stroke victims, cerebral palsy, visual impairments, balance difficulties, polio, and amputations. |
